Phase behavior of nematic-nanoparticle mixtures

چکیده
We study the effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on thermotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) in relatively dilute NP–LC mixtures. are interested fundamental generic mechanisms that quantitatively and qualitatively affect phase behavior LCs. A simple molecular field analysis shows a transition will likely occur upon entry into ordered phase. Moreover, interaction between nematogenic NPs LCs could force sergeant–soldier-like behavior, which only one component is affected despite symmetric appearance coupling term. When anisotropic, their influence LC can be different depending anchoring, even absence disorder. illustrate numerically random-field-type disorder might impose either short-range, quasi-long-range, or long-range order, survive.

Multibody Interactions, Phase Behavior, and Clustering in Nanoparticle-Polyelectrolyte Mixtures.
We present the results of a computational study of the interactions, phase-behavior and aggregation characteristics of charged nanoparticles (CNPs) suspended in solution of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes (PEs). We used an extension of the mean-field polymer self-consistent field theory (SCFT) model presented in our earlier work ( Macromolecules , 2014 , 47 , 6095 - 6112 ) to explicitly cha...
متن کاملSize ratio effects on interparticle interactions and phase behavior of microsphere-nanoparticle mixtures.
We investigate the interparticle interactions and phase behavior of microsphere-nanoparticle mixtures of high charge asymmetry and varying size ratio. In the absence of nanoparticles, negligibly charged microspheres flocculate as a result of van der Waals interactions. Upon addition of a lower critical nanoparticle volume fraction, the microspheres are stabilized by the formation of nanoparticl...
متن کاملPhase behavior and 3D structure of strongly attractive microsphere-nanoparticle mixtures.
We investigate the phase behavior and 3D structure of strongly attractive mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles. These binary mixtures are electrostatically tuned to promote a repulsion between like-charged (microsphere-microsphere and nanoparticle-nanoparticle) species and a strong attraction between oppositely charged (microsphere-nanoparticle) species. Using confocal ...
متن کاملFloating nematic phase in colloidal platelet-sphere mixtures
The phase behaviour of colloidal dispersions is interesting for fundamental reasons and for technological applications such as photonic crystals and electronic paper. Sedimentation, which in everyday life is relevant from blood analysis to the shelf life of paint, is a means to determine phase boundaries by observing distinct layers in samples that are in sedimentation-diffusion equilibrium. Ho...
